Winter Outing at Snow Mountain Ranch (YMCA of the Rockies)

 

 

When: Saturday/Sunday, 21/22-Feb-2009

Where: This fun overnight adventure occurs at Snow Mountain Ranch (SMR), 12 miles from Winter Park, CO. How to get there: from I-70, take exit 232 and follow US40 toward Granby/Empire. Drive through town of Berthoud Falls and over Berthoud pass. Drive through towns of Winter Park, Fraser and Tabernash. Look for brown sign "Ski Area Ahead". The Snow Mountain Ranch-YMCA of the Rockies entrance will be the on left hand side of road.

Circle Leaders: Please give your attendance forecast and $$$ to our Expedition Navigator, John-David by the December Basecamp meeting (or as soon as possible) to provide an accurate room count and to prevent financial penalties. Fees are due by the January Basecamp meeting.

Our rooms are in: Aspenbrook and Silver Sage lodges. These lodges are adjacent to each other (buildings #4 & #21 on the map).

Fee: $47 per Dad, $16 per Daughter, in a check to "Indian Princesses" (yes, this is the name of the account). Two meals are included in the fee (Saturday’s dinner and Sunday’s breakfast). Each attendee receives 1 meal ticket for both meals (Sunday’s date is stamped as the expiration date). Meals are provided at Schlessman Commons Dining Facility.

Saturday's schedule:
- 300pm - 500pm - Check-in with your Circle Leader.
- 530pm - 630pm - Dinner at Schlessmann Commons Dining Facility
- 700pm - 900pm - Skit presentation at Indian Peaks Lodge auditorium.
- 900pm - 930pm - Dance
- 1100pm - - - - - - - Lights Out

Sunday's schedule:
- time TBA - - Breakfast at Schlessmann Commons Dining Facility.
- 1000am - - - Check out by depositing your key in the cardboard key box in Aspenbrook Lodge.

Check-in/Check-out: Check-in with your Circle Navigator (not the admin bldg or front desk). Circle Navigators check-in at Aspenbrook Lodge with the host Circle representative starting at 3:00pm on Saturday (each Circle Leader gets all keys & meal tickets for his Circle). Your Circle will be assigned a block of rooms in either Aspenbrook Lodge or Silver Sage Lodge. Check-out is 10:00am (deposit your key into the cardboard drop box or give your key to the host circle rep in Aspenbrook Lodge). Lost key charge is $10.

Skits: 7:00pm Saturday - at Indian Peaks Lodge auditorium. Each skit is limited to 5 minutes, at which point the lights will be dimmed. Each Circle will designate a judge.

Rooms: Your Circle handles the room assignments. Each room is large enough for 2 dads and their daughters; there is usually at least 1 queen size bed and 2 sets of bunk beds. Each room has a bathroom with a shower. Towels and bed linens are provided. Each room normally has a phone to receive calls. Cell phone coverage is usually available. There are no TV’s. There are no porters; you are responsible for bringing your luggage in and out of the lodge.

Suggested items to bring:
• Toiletries
• Clothing for Saturday evening and Sunday morning and the overnight stay
• Warm clothes/coat for walking to the cafeteria and auditorium building (skit)
Optional:
• Camera & film
• Sled & Snowsuit/gloves/boots/etc for the sledding/tubing hill
• Bathing suit & goggles
• Books
• DVD player with movies

On-Site Activities: swimming pool, roller skating rink and basketball court, climbing wall, gift shop.

Kiva Center (bldg #12) has roller-skating, basketball, volleyball, ping-pong, foosball (no fees for these activites).
Swimming Pool (bldg #23) has an Olympic sized (25m) pool with slide, sauna (minimum age is 12+). No fees for swimming.
Climbing Wall:  The 22-foot indoor climbing wall is located in the Kiva Center (bldg #12) and offers climbing challenges and fun for all abilities.   Sign up is open to all guests of SMR on a first come first serve basis when registering.  Simply go across the street to the Program Building sign up, fill out the waiver form and pay $5/person. 
Nordic Center (Outdoor Activities):  Snow Mountain Ranch YMCA of the Rockies is one of the premier cross-country ski areas in the United States!  Over 20,000 skiers per year visit the property covering 5,100 acres of mountain meadows at an altitude of 9,000 feet. The ranch has 100 kilometers of trail system including 2 kilometers of lighted trails for night skiing.
Sledding & Tubing is available all day long.  Snow Mountain Ranch has a new Sledding / Tubing Hill with rope tow next to the Nordic Center.  You can rent tubes for $10 per day (or bring your own sled).  Snow Mountain Ranch's tubing hill is "way cool".
Ice skating pavilion. $3/person to skate and $2/person skate rental if you don’t have your own.  Open until 10PM.
Coffee and Hot Chocolate are available at the Skinny Ski Café in The Nordic Center (Coffee is free and there is a slight charge for hot chocolate).  The Nordic Center is open weather permitting:
Monday-Friday (8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m.)
Saturday-Sunday (8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m.)
Need a break from the outdoors?  The Craft Center in the basement of the Leggett building is open from 8:30AM – 4:30PM and 6PM - 9PM where a variety of crafts are available for $5 - $10 each.

Possible Offsite Activities (on your own) before or after the Winter Outing:
• Frasier Tubing Hill (mention that you're with Indian Princesses)
• Skiing at Winter Park
• Snowmobile rentals
